Background: Although we have made small amounts of Pinot Noir from the ‘Lochleven’ Vineyard to blend with Shiraz, this is the first 100% Pinot Noir we have made and released.
Fruit Source: Pinot Noir from vines planted in 1973 on the Kindred family’s, ‘Lochleven’ Estate on the corner of Deasys and McDonalds Roads in Pokolbin. The cuttings to plant ‘Lochleven’ were taken off the McWilliams Mothervine vineyard which originated from the original James Busby cuttings and is believed to be the MV6 clone.
Fermentation: Grapes were hand-picked and then fermented in open vats and plunged twice daily. 20% whole bunches were retained in the ferment.
Maturation: Maturation was for 12 months in one and two year-old French oak Hogsheads.
Winemaker’s comments: Early rain during 2015 affected the white grape harvest but a break in rainfall allowed the Pinot Noir to be harvested disease free and with good ripeness. The Pinot was the best red grape parcel we harvested in 2015.
Tasting note: Pale cherry-crimson in colour; there are scents of lifted rose petal and potpourri aromas on the nose, with secondary spice. The palate is clearly varietal Pinot Noir that displays savoury dark cherry flavours. A fine line of acid balances the lingering palate.
Cellaring estimate: medium term (10+ years).
