Background:Meerea Park’s first Cabernet Merlot blend was released from the 1996 vintage. The Cabernet and Merlot fruit parcels are always out of area with the Hilltops region showing the best promise so far.
Fruit source:The ‘Terra Australis’ Vineyard at Kingsvale near Young in the Hilltops region of New South Wales.
Fermentation:After being trucked to Pokolbin overnight, the fruit was fermented in closed tanks being pumped over twice daily.
Maturation: Post fermentation, the wine was matured in all previously used French oak barrels of varying sizes for 17 months prior to bottling.
Winemaker’s comments:2013’s vintage conditions in Hilltops was very good and supplied us with high quality grapes to work with. The harvest was trouble free and delivered ripe and more importantly disease free fruit. Yields were moderate. The blend ratio is 78% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Merlot.
Tasting note:A mid crimson colour in the glass, varietal Cabernet Sauvignon lifted red berries, blackcurrant and black olive aromas fill the nose. The oak influence is moderate with a touch of Mocha. The palate is medium-bodied but flavoursome and balanced by the ripe silky tannins. Drinking well now as a young wine but will develop in the short term and hold for 10 years.
Cellaring estimate:Medium term.
Suggested food match:Red meat cuisine.
What the Experts Say
A 78/28% blend from the Terra Australis Vineyard, matured in used French oak for 17 months. Has instantaneous appeal with its juicy red cherry, cassis and blueberry flavours leading the way on the light to medium-bodied palate, perfectly pitched oak and tannins add an extra dimension. Ludicrously underpriced.
