Region: Hunter Valley
Background: The ‘XYZ’ brand wines constitute modern styles of Semillon, Chardonnay and Shiraz. New Generation wines from the Hunter Valley.
Fruit source: Chardonnay grapes were sourced from an established Upper Hunter vineyard.
Fermentation: The fruit was whole bunch pressed and then barrel fermented with no malolactic fermentation allowed.
Maturation: 100% French oak puncheons, 30% new and the balance ranging from one year-old to three years-old for 10 months.
Winemaker’s comments: 2017 was a warm dry vintage for the entire Hunter Valley with 47 degrees the hottest day in mid-February. Vintage was compacted down to 2 weeks with Chardonnay ripening early, around the beginning of February.
Tasting notes: Medium straw in colour, aromas of peach, rockmelon and dried fig on the nose. The French oak is present, but not a main component of the wine. It is flavour packed, the palate is long, but has a gentle balancing acidity.
Cellaring estimate: Short—medium term.
Suggested food match: Fuller flavoured seafood, chicken and pasta cuisine.
