Region: Hunter Valley

Alcohol: 13.0%

Background: ‘Indie’ is a label used for non mainstream or ‘out there’ varieties and blends from the Hunter Valley. Marsanne and Roussanne both originate and flourish in France’s Rhone Valley but do exceptionally well in the Hunter as well.

Fruit Source: Both the Marsanne and Roussanne are grown on the  Kindred family’s, ‘Lochleven’ Estate on Palmers Lane. The Roussanne a more recent addition.

Fermentation: Both varieties were hand harvested then fermented separately in French oak Hogsheads, 25% was new. The blend is 70% Marsanne and 30% Roussanne.

Maturation: Both parcels were kept separate and blended after 10 months of maturation.

Winemaker’s comments: White grape varieties did very well in 2016 across the spectrum. Aided by early ripening and light yields, the worst of the rain was avoided, with high quality the result.

Tasting note: An aromatic expression of this blend, tropical nuances with quince and melon. The palate is medium-bodied, well weighted with great weight but kept fresh and lively by fine steely and refreshing acidity.

Cellaring estimate: Medium term (10+ years).

Suggested food match: Full flavoured seafood.
