Region: Hunter Valley
Background: The XYZ brand wines constitute modern styles of the Hunter staples of Semillon, Chardonnay and Shiraz. New Generation wines.
Fruit source: Fruit for this wine is from the 40+ year-old ‘Lochleven’ vineyard located on Deasy’s Road in Pokolbin.
Fermentation: The fruit was whole bunch pressed and then barrel fermented with no malolactic fermentation allowed.
Maturation: 100% French oak ranging from one year-old to three years-old for seven months.
Winemaker’s comments: The 2012 Hunter vintage only favoured the white varieties, and then only on a very ad hoc basis and each release needs to be taken on its own merits. To release a 2012 Hunter red was virtually impossible due to the rain.
Tasting notes: A surprisingly intense nose of melon and fig with moderate spicy supporting oak. The palate follows through from the nose and is flavoursome and fruit sweet. Gentle acidity balances the wine.
Cellaring estimate: Short term.
Suggested food match: Fuller flavoured seafood, chicken and pasta cuisine.
