Region: Hunter Valley
Background: The XYZ brand wines constitute modern styles of Chardonnay and Shiraz. New Generation wines from the Hunter Valley.
Fruit source: Fruit for this wine is from an old-vine vineyard in Pokolbin and a mature Chardonnay vineyard, also in Pokolbin.
Fermentation: The fruit was whole bunch pressed and then barrel fermented with no malolactic fermentation allowed.
Maturation: 100% French oak ranging from one year-old to three years-old for an period of six months.
Winemaker’s comments: 2015 never really showed much promise as heavy vintage rains began in early January. This caused ripening delays (we commenced on Feb 2nd) and set up disease problems throughout the Hunter Valley. Whilst not getting through vintage totally unscathed, our old-vine sources proved their value by us being able to harvest, small quantities, but very acceptable fruit.
Tasting notes: Bright straw in colour. Fig, peach and rock-melon aromas feature on the nose with subtle spicy oak in the background. The palate is full flavoured with a hint of fruit sweetness, but kept in line by crisp acidity.
Cellaring estimate: Short—medium term
Suggested food match: Fuller flavoured seafood, chicken and pasta cuisine.
