Background: The ‘XYZ’ brand wines constitute modern styles of Semillon, Chardonnay and Shiraz. New Generation wines from the Hunter Valley.
Fruit source: Chardonnay grapes were sourced from the cool climate ‘Wandoo’ vineyard in Orange and trucked to Pokolbin for processing.
Fermentation: The fruit was whole bunch pressed and then barrel fermented with no malolactic fermentation allowed.
Maturation: 100% French oak puncheons, 30% new and the balance ranging from one year-old to three years-old for 10 months.
Winemaker’s comments: ‘XYZ’ Chardonnay is usually made from Hunter Valley grapes, but the wet period in February proved detrimental to the variety. Therefore we headed to Orange, who had a wonderful vintage for Chardonnay and quality is extremely high.
Tasting notes: Light straw in colour, aromas of yellow peach and dried fig on the nose. Oak plays a role but in great harmony with the fruit. The palate is full flavoured while still remaining fresh and vibrant and balanced by fine acidity.
Cellaring estimate: Short—medium term.
Suggested food match: Fuller flavoured seafood, chicken and pasta cuisine.Download pdf
